South Scotland
Squirrelpox is a virus carried by grey squirrels without causing them harm, but fatal to our native reds. It is already present in south Scotland as grey squirrels, some carrying squirrelpox, spread northwards from England, but the rest of Scotland currently remains squirrelpox-free. Red Squirrels in South Scotland (RSSS), the sister project of SSRS, is working to set up a pox-free buffer zone to contain the spread of the virus.
Working for Red Squirrels in South Scotland, Project Officers Richard Wales and Stephanie Johnstone cover the Scottish Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, South and East Ayrshire and the southern parts of South Lanarkshire.
